The aim of this course is to provide appropriate experience of the working environment of a non-governmental organisation, industry or statutory body in the community and/or environmental sector. This will allow an insight into the missions and functions of the organisation and workplace structures, and the opportunity to meet practitioners and develop practical skills and experience.

4 workshop sessions of 2 hours as scheduled on MyCampus, plus additional supervision meetings with academic staff and placement hosts as required. 20 days of flexible placement in Semester 2, by arrangement with the placement provider.

This course aims to:

■ Provide high quality project-based work experience within an environmental or social organisation (non-governmental organisation, industry, local government or statutory body).

■ Promote the acquisition of specialist, conceptual and transferable skills.

■ Provide an opportunity to put into practice some of the knowledge and skills gained during the programme.

■ Develop skills that may be an advantage in preparing for a wide range of employment, for instance time management, independent learning and problem solving, project evaluation.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Apply relevant knowledge to the practical aspects of the work of the placement organisation;

■ Analyse their role within the placement organisation and how it relates to the wider context of the placement organisation, and responses to social and environmental change;

■ Evaluate the key aims, strategies and professional practices of the placement organisation in relation to wider professional practice in response to the management of and response to social and environmental change, including relevant national and international policy, strategy and funding issues;

■ Critically reflect on their work as an individual and as a team member and evaluate their skills in listening and responding perceptively to others;

■ Evaluate acquired knowledge and skills and their application to future employment opportunities.
