Short Description
This course explores relationships between sound and moving image in the context of narrative film. It covers the recording and editing of Foley and sound effects and the development of bespoke sound design, alongside the historical, theoretical and aesthetic context of the use of sound within narrative film.
Timetable
10x 1hr seminars; 6x 1hr lectures and 4x 1hr tutorials over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus. This one of the Honours options in Music which may not run every year. The options that are running this session are available on MyCampus.

Assessment
The standard assessments for this course are:
■ Portfolio - 100% comprising:
■ Sound work for narrative film - 80%
■ Critical commentary (1000 words) - 20%

Course Aims
This course will provide the opportunity to:
■ develop students' understanding of the use of sound in narrative film
■ develop students' skills in using technology to record and edit post production audio
■ engage students in applying critical and analytical thinking to sound image relationships in the context of narrative film
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ undertake technically proficient creation and manipulation of sonic material in response to moving image
■ use computer based tools for both recording and designing their own sound effects
■ apply their knowledge and skills creatively and analytically to produce effective post-production audio materials
■ use creative processes to investigate relationships between technology, sound and image in the context of narrative
■ apply creative and technical thinking appropriate at Honours level
