Poetry Intervenes Now makes poetic reports on the present in dialogue with contemporary experimental forms. The course engages current affairs, explores the city's resources and / or local environments, using poetic strategies of diversity, class and queer to investigate and celebrate difference. Seminars closely examine the formal strategies of contemporary experimental poets. External site visits are points of departure for exploring local environments, cultural events and institutions. Corresponding workshops develop skills of sharing, presenting and critiquing responses to the set texts.

4 x 2 hr workshops, 3 x 2 hr seminars, 3 x 2 hr accompanied site visits or virtual visits, as arranged. As scheduled on MyCampus.

The standard assessments for this course are: 

■ Pamphlet of poetry (5000 words or 200 lines) - 90%  

■ 5 minute oral presentation of one poem written and adapted for performance by the student - 10% 

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available: 

■ There are no alternatives to the Pamphlet of poetry (5000 words or 200 lines), but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustment (Students should follow the usual process for extensions). 

■ Recorded presentation or one-to-one presentation / discussion/Q&A with staff (where presentation would normally be in class) as alternative to presentation.

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.  

This course aims to: 

■ Examine contemporary BAME, Queer, Feminist Poetics through appropriate critical frameworks and contemporary debates

■ Enable students to produce original poetry pamphlets, informed by and engaging with contemporary issues of difference and diversity, BAME, Queer, Feminist poetics 
 

■ Encourage students to explore and test analytical and linguistic tools involved in criticism of their own work and that of their peers

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

■ articulate a sophisticated knowledge of contemporary experimental BAME, Queer, Feminist poetics in relation to current affairs through creative practice

■ evaluate the cultural significance of contemporary experimental BAME, Queer, Feminist poetics in relation to oral and print media

■ conduct advanced creative practice of making poetry in text form and adapting for oral delivery and performance

■ assess their own creative processes while putting them in a larger and relevant context of creative practice
