Short Description
The course provides practical insight into the skills and software foundational to advanced meso- micro- and nano-manufacturing techniques. Students will become familiar with Computer Aided Design software, with specific application to ultrasmall manufacturing processes.

30% Set Exercise - initial training in Computer Aided Design tools
30% Project work - development of CAD model of nanoscale system
40% Report: 10% Report on CAD exercises, 30% Report on development of model of nanoscale manufactured system
Course Aims
This course aims to develop students' abilities to assess the benefits of Computer Aided Design tools, to use them efficiently and effectively, and to put those simulations in the context of data from real, fabricated and experimentally measured manufactured products.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ design, model, simulate and assess structural and functional elements in microscale manufactured systems using state-of-art Computer Aided Design tools,
■ describe key processes in the manufacture of microelectronic, micro-electro-mechanical, and photonic systems, critically assessing the advantages and disadvantages of each process, and its susceptibility to effective computer modelling,
■ analyse data from experimental measurement on manufactured systems with micro- or nano-scale components, critically assessing results obtained and responding clearly in written form.
