Short Description
This course examines theoretical and practical aspects of applied map design and the visualisation of geographic information, and an introduction to aspects of map use. It builds further practical skills in applying map design to various topics.
Timetable
Classes will be held on one day of the week during the second 1/2 of semester 2, normally Tuesdays.

Course Aims
■ To further examine theoretical and practical aspects of map design and the visualisation of geographic information.
■ To further develop skills in processing and presenting geospatial data.
To give an introduction to the perception and use of maps
To introduce the particular considerations in the design and production of a range of map types and mapping environments.
■ To introduce modern visualisation techniques(eg augmented and virtual reality) to geospatial data
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
On completing this unit students will be able to:
■ Explain the principles of visual perception in relation to maps
■ Critically analyse methods of portraying different types of geospatial data
■ Describe and critically assess recent developments in cartographic visualisation, such as multi-media, animation, etc.
■ Explain the particular design and production issues relating to certain types of mapping and mapping environments
■ Evaluate map design from the point of view of the map user
■ Design and produce maps using appropriate techniques
■ Give presentations and contribute to oral discussion on map design and cartographic issues.
