Short Description
In this course, students will learn about different perspectives on the nature of knowledge and evidence; and they will apply their new understanding to critique the evidence base for approaches to, and activities for, learning, teaching and assessment.

Assessment
50%: Written critical appraisal: Structured written responses to Modified Essay Questions (MEQs) that assesses understanding of alternative perspectives on knowledge and evidence in health professions education/education research. 800-1000 words. (ILOs 1, 2 and 3)
50%: Micro-reflection: A small reflective piece using alternate formats (short essays, video presentations, audio podcasts) 500 words or approx. 3 mins. (ILO 4)
Course Aims
This course aims to give students the opportunity to:
1. Develop their knowledge and understanding of various perspectives on the nature of knowledge and evidence in social sciences, including education;
2. Critically appraise education literature/research data, taking into account appropriate perspectives, paradigms and criteria for evaluation.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Appraise the nature of knowledge and evidence in health professions education, including its application to learning, teaching and assessment.
2. Analyse and interpret research data, and appraise and synthesise education literature, in a manner consistent with relevant methodological approaches and evaluation criteria.
3. Critical appraise and synthesise education literature/research, taking into account appropriate perspectives, paradigms and criteria for evaluation.
4. Reflect on personal practice in course or education research.
