Short Description

This course will deliver the fundamentals of health economics and the practical elements of economic evaluation that are integral to health technology assessment.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of health economics, its value and limitations. It will familiarise students with the application of economic theory to health and health care issues, the principles of health economics and the techniques of economic appraisal.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Assess and apply key concepts of economics to address a variety of health sector issues.

2. Identify and evaluate the distinctive economic characteristics of health care and how they affect the demand for and supply of health care.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of the main types of health care systems worldwide and the role of HTA within these systems.

4. Use knowledge of a range of health economic evaluation techniques and frameworks to identify, apply, and interpret suitable techniques to specific relevant circumstances and context.

5. Identify and effectively employ knowledge of the contribution of health economics and HTA to health care decision making.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
