This course introduces students in an interdisciplinary way to the key themes, ideological traditions and institutional settings in the history of Scottish political culture - broadly defined - since the Union of 1707. Students will encounter various different approaches to political culture, including those of history, political science and literary studies.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ 1 essay of c. 3000 words - 70%

■ 1 seminar presentation - 20%

■ Seminar contribution - 10%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the essay, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

■ Recorded presentation OR one-to-one presentation / discussion/Q&A with staff (where presentation would normally be in class) as an alternative to the seminar presentation

■ Written response to seminar material in advance or after seminar as an alternative to the seminar contribution

This course aims to

■ present different approaches to political culture, including those of history, political science, literary studies and the law.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

■ apply a knowledge of the key issues, ideologies and institutions of modern Scottish history and politics

■ identify interdisciplinary approaches to the study of politics, institutions and their wider hinterlands in both elite and popular culture.
