Short Description
This course will develop a critical awareness of geographical theories and engagements within thacross a range ofe fields of including social change and social justice; environment and developmentmental health; social geographies and cultural-historical processes. The course will assess the impacts of practical engagements 'beyond the academy' in Global North and Global Southdifferent contexts, and assess debates about the politics and power relations of such engagements

A 3000 word essay or equivalentrecorded podcast on a geographical issue for communication beyond the academy (Group mark 65%)
A written academic background, rational and justification underpinning podcast (Group mark 35%)
Course Aims
■ To develop a critical awareness of geographical engagements within the fields of social change and social justice; mental health; social geographies and cultural-historical processes.
■ To examine the impacts of such geographical engagements beyond the academy in different contexts
■ To assess debates about the politics and power relations of such engagements
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ discuss issues of participatory democracy, social justice, and international solidarity
■ discuss the role of geography in understanding political ecology and environmental conflicts/jukey contemporary issues
■ discuss issues of performance, representation, embodiment and materiality
■ discuss the expression and experience of the past in the present.
■ discuss the politics and power relations of different geographical engagements beyond the academy.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
