The course affords students the opportunity of working with a practicing playwright/dramaturge towards the creation of a major new piece of writing

The course consists of 5 x 3hr development workshops, 1 x 6hr playreading workshop, 2 x 30mins individual tutorials.

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ A full-length stage script produced through semester through writing and dramaturgical practices, with the final submission reflecting a form agreed with the course playwriting tutor - 100%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There is no alternative to the stage script, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor. 

This course aims to:

■ develop and expand the students' practical skills in writing for performance

■ deepen students' experience of working creatively, reflexively and productively with a professional practitioner - generally a practising playwright/dramaturge;

■ develop students' abilities to respond positively to creative processes and critical feedback;

■ extend students' awareness of the potential of practical experimentation as a mode of developing their writing; and

■ expose students to working with other professional practitioners - generally a director and/or actor - and understand how these roles can contribute to script development

By the end of this course student will be able to:

■ Produce their own original stage script or portfolio of original pieces of writing for performance, edited to a high standard.

■ Identify and employ a structure for their writing for performance that is appropriate to the ideas the work seeks to communicate.

■ Create characters and dialogue/speech that are well-defined, consistent and fit for purpose, with effective line-by-line writing.

■ Formulate a coherent aesthetic vision in their script/portfolio.

■ Recognise and develop the existing field of playwriting practice in offering something new, challenging, imaginative, original and creative
