An exploration of key research methodologies relevant to the critical and practical study of performance and leading to the scoping of a research project.

10 x 2hr Seminar sessions over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ Assessment 1 - Presentation (5-6 minutes) - 40%

■ Assessment 2 - Scoping Document (2000 words) - 60%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ There are no alternatives to the assessments, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustment (students should follow the usual process for extensions).

Further reasonable adjustments may be provided where necessary. Students are encouraged to consult with the course convenor.

This course aims to:

■ Introduce students to the fundamentals of postgraduate research including research context and methodology

■ introduce a variety of interdisciplinary methodologies for the study of performance; alert students to the most recent critical interventions in performance practice, dramaturgy and critical theory

■ explore contemporary methods of practice as research.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Discuss key methodologies that shape contemporary theatre and performance studies.

■ Consider the place of research in professional creative practice.

■ Synthesise relevant methodologies drawn from a range of disciplines.

■ Analyse a range of theoretical texts, both historical and contemporary in provenance.

■ Identify relevant methodologies for their area of research interest.
