Short Description

This course aims to provide practising teachers with an overview of current policy and practice in the area of working with multilingual children who are learning English in both national and international contexts with a significant element of the course focusing on the development of the children's subject literacies.

Assessment

Part 1 (1000 words) 25%

The students will select 3-4 texts that could be used to develop a unit of learning. One of the texts may be an multimodal (illustration/artefact). They will write a 1000-word rationale for their choice of texts and their suitability for multilingual children learning English in their chosen context. (LO3, LO4).

Part 2 (3,000) 75%

Students will write a critical review of how they would use these texts to develop a unit of learning (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4)

Course Aims

This course will provide students with opportunities to:

 

Examine in detail how children develop and acquire additional languages including subject specific languages.

 

Demonstrate awareness of how theories of language learning influence language development and acquisition in the family, school and wider community.

 

Embedded within this module will be opportunities to:

 

Examine and critique case studies of multilingual children learning English in a variety of contexts

 

Complete an enquiry that links language learning theory and classroom pedagogy.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

LO1 Demonstrate an understanding of how children become multilingual in home and school environments from social and cognitive perspectives

 

LO2 Apply knowledge in order to reflect on challenge and expand their own values and attitudes towards multilingual children learning English through classroom based enquiry and critical reflection.

 

LO3 Demonstrate an understanding of the demands of general pedagogical discourse and subject-specific discourses through exploration and analysis of authentic classroom discourse

 

LO3 Critically evaluate and reflect upon children's experiences of language learning in relation to language learning theory and developing classroom pedagogies.

 

LO4 Demonstrate an understanding of and concern for the local and global dimensions that impact on multilingual children in relation to issues of diversity, equality, health and well being and social justice through a variety of different media.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
