Short Description
This Semester Two option in the MEd/MSc TESOL programmes provides students with an introduction to language testing and assessment. Students learn to design tests for different language skills in line with the assessment context and purpose, address key qualities of a language test, and explore the relationship between assessment and learning.
Timetable
2 hours per week (1 hour lecture and 1 hour seminar), for 10 weeks.

To understand how proficiency is defined and assessed for different language skills
To learn concepts and principles of language test design
To understand the relationship among assessment, feedback and learning
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
1. Demonstrate an understanding of proficiency in different language skills, and the relationship between assessment, feedback and learning
2. Demonstrate the ability to select and use appropriate items/tasks to assess relevant language skills and appropriate ways to score performances
3. Apply the above knowledge to develop a language test fitting for the assessment context and purpose
4. Analyse key qualities of a language test and ways to improve, balance or prioritise different qualities
5. Critically evaluate language assessment literature and apply it relevantly to support test design and analysis
