The Practice as Research Project requires students to propose a performance project or presentation in response to research question(s) agreed with their supervisor. The project will be delivered via practice-driven research, devising and rehearsal. Students will also write a critical reflection on their process and provide documentation.

Students will receive:

■ Ten hour-long supervision sessions with an external professional practitioner and member of the Theatre Studies academic staff.

■ A staff-led seminar on documentation (2 hours).

The standard assessments for this course are:

■ One assessment through performance practice (with option of taught workshop or demonstration) - 60%

■ Documentation of performance practice - 20%

■ Critical evaluation (written) of performance practice (2500-3000 words) - 20%

If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:

■ Alternative medium as an alternative to the performance practice.

■ There is no alternative to the documentation, but a flexible deadline can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

The course aims to:

■ Develop and deepen the student's personal skills in different aspects of theatre making and performance practice

■ Develop and deepen students' research interest in their chosen practice

■ Promote an engagement with other scholarly, critical, theoretical or applied arguments relevant to contemporary performance practice

■ Encourage the application of acquired research skills to a supervised independent project

By the end of the course students will be able to: 

■ Apply practical skills and knowledge in contemporary theatre and performance making practices

■ Apply research skills to contemporary theatre and performance making practices

■ Critically evaluate the main primary and secondary sources in their chosen field

■ Identify key skills and good practices in delivering a performance-based project to an audience

■ Define, plan, and execute a sustained, focused and coherent research project through practice

■ Work independently on a sustained creative project
