Short Description

This course explores media accessibility, understood as removing barriers for people to enjoy media. It will examine practices such as subtitling (both interlingual and for the Deaf and hard of hearing), dubbing and respeaking, accessible screenings, audio description, and other practices that draw from new technologies. Practical training in subtitling will be included, and students may choose to do a creative/critical final assessment or a critical one, based on their own interests.

Oral Presentation - 10 minutes - 20%

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ provide students with a strong awareness of the linguistic, theoretical and professional issues involved in media accessibility 

■ examine a range of different case studies from television, theatre and film across the world 

■ consider the implications of globalisation and developing technology upon media accessibility 

■ equip students with practical subtitling skills using relevant subtitling software 

■ explore and illustrate the use of relevant scholarship from Audiovisual Translation Studies, Media Accessibility and Disability Studies 

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ critically evaluate practices of media accessibility using relevant theories 

■ create and design practices of media accessibility, such as subtitles or plans for events, with reference to critical issues in the field 

■ critically reflect on the use of technologies in media accessibility 

■ communicate complex ideas orally and in writing in relation to subtitling and media accessibility 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
