Short Description

This course provides an in-depth exploration of contemporary debates framing urban design as public policy and practical knowledge of the tools of design governance used to guide and control physical change in the built environment through city planning and real estate development systems

18 hours of timetabled on-campus teaching in Semester 2 delivered in 3 hourly blocks (1hr lecture + 2hr workshop), once per week, over 6 consecutive weeks

Assessment

A 2,500 word professional-style report that applies theories of design governance to a critical point in the planning and development process and proposes policy responses (100%)

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the theory and application of design governance, including the tools that are used in planning and real estate development systems to shape change in the built environment. It provides students with a conceptually grounded and practical introduction to the tools of design governance and how built form emerges through the implementation of policy and guidance and the negotiations that take place between public and private sector actors in planning and development systems

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

■ Apply the principal theories of design governance to the process of shaping the built environment.

■ Identify the critical points for design governance intervention in contemporary planning and development systems.

■ Evaluate the formal and informal tools of design governance as policy, guidance and regulatory instruments.

■ Critically assess the role of public and private sector actors in shaping design outcomes in the built environment.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.

 

Minimum requirement for award of credit for students on MSc City Planning is D3 or above.

 

University standard regulations apply to students on other qualifications.
