Assessment

Assessment:

GIS project report of 2,500 words testing the use of spatial data and GIS techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of spatial data analysis principles and practices (100%).

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental theories and applications of geographic information systems (GIS). Students will learn the principles underlying how GIS should be used. Students will also learn how GIS has been, and can be, applied to undertake spatial analysis on the built environment. The course will also provide a practical introduction to GIS tools as students will learn how to use GIS software to produce high quality maps and to undertake spatial analysis relevant to the degrees they are studying.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Critically evaluate the principles, concepts and theories underpinning spatial analysis;

■ Demonstrate an understanding of spatial data and how they are organized in GIS software;

■ Apply spatial analysis skill to empirical applications by designing and undertaking a project usings GIS software to analyse spatial data for a topic related to the degree being studied.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.

Minimum requirement for award of credit for students on MSc City Planning is D3 or above.

All the students are required to attend all the lab (practical) sessions otherwise University standard regulations apply to students on other qualifications.
