Short Description
In Sustainable Spatial Strategies Lab students apply theory and evidence on city planning and development to a spatial planning challenge. Learning is grounded in the practice of urban planning for sustainability and resilient city-building.

Assessment
Summative assessment comprises a professional group report (6,000 words) outlining a vision for an urban transformation of an area over a given period, worth 75%, and a group presentation (15 minutes) summarising the report worth 25%.
Course Aims
The aim of this course is to enable students to generate visionary and imaginative responses to spatial planning challenges, which are realistic and derive from substantial investigation and analysis of relevant data and other evidence. The course will be grounded in the practice of urban planning for sustainable urban development.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Articulate the concept of sustainable spatial planning as distinct from land-use planning, and its application at multiple spatial scales.
■ Interpret and evaluate a range of qualitative and quantitative evidence and apply it to the development of a spatial plan using scenario-building techniques.
■ Consider and evaluate the various risks involved in urban transformations.
■ Reflect on the ethical implications of urban transformation, including impacts on communities and the environment.
■ Apply knowledge of planning policy and development processes to develop a visionary urban transformation of a particular urban area.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
Minimum requirement for award of credit for students on MSc City Planning and MSc City Planning & Real Estate Development is D3 or above.
University standard regulations apply for students on all other qualifications.
