The course, aimed at master’s students, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with little or no prior hands-on experience, provided a comprehensive introduction to both single-particle analysis (SPA) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET).

The training course combined remote lectures covering the theoretical foundations of cryo-EM workflows, from sample preparation and screening to data collection and introductory image processing, with practical sessions hosted across several partner facilities. At SCMI, participants gained hands-on experience in key techniques including cryo-sample preparation, cell freezing, correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM), SPA and tomography data collection using the JEOL CRYO ARM 300 kV microscope.

The course was organised jointly by the Astbury Biostructure Laboratory (University of Leeds)eBIC at Diamond Light Source, the Midlands Regional Cryo-EM Facility (University of Leicester)Birkbeck College (University of London) and SCMI (University of Glasgow). We were delighted to see such enthusiasm and engagement from participants throughout the week and would like to thank all partners and attendees for contributing to a highly successful training event.
