Reflection by AI ethics intern student Abbie Thorpe

My experience centred around the Lovelace-Hodgkin Symposium
When I was searching for an internship in 2024, my interest was caught immediately on the concept of a course on not just artificial intelligence but on the ethics behind it, something I believed no one around me was talking about at the time.
People, especially students, are wary of AI and tend to either dismiss its use entirely or, on the flipside, utilise it for their studies without much ethical consideration. The internship was based around the exciting Lovelace Hodgkins symposium in October, in which speakers from around the world were brought into workshops and talks to discuss how and why we can make AI more ethical.
The three-day conference was both incredibly insightful and thought-provoking, furthering my interest in AI ethics. My experience learning about AI has further encouraged me to apply for a Master's here at the University of Glasgow, ‘Law and Technology Regulation LLM’, where I will be learning more about AI and the law (and I cannot wait!).
