Adam Smith

Summary

Glasgow's museums and university archives hold thousands of objects connected to the British Empire - trading records, plantation documents, portraits, and company papers. Most of them have never been displayed with their full histories attached.

In the first part of the evening, curators will lead small guided sessions around objects from the collections, exploring their connections to Adam Smith, the history of Atlantic slavery, and Scotland's role in the British Empire. You will have the chance to see documents and artefacts rarely displayed in public.

The evening concludes with a lecture by Nelson Cummins, Curator, Legacies of Slavery and Empire, Glasgow Museums: "Forgotten Histories: Slavery Remembrance, Scottish Enlightenment and Glasgow” with a reception to follow.
